Ultrasound gel creates a continuous contact layer between the fetal Doppler probe and your skin. Air does not transmit ultrasound efficiently, so the gel helps reduce air gaps and allows the Doppler signal to pass more effectively between the probe and body.

Using proper ultrasound gel is strongly recommended when using a fetal Doppler. Without enough coupling gel, air between the probe and skin can interfere with ultrasound transmission and make fetal heartbeat sounds more difficult to locate or hear clearly.

Apply a small amount of Aura Baby™ Ultrasound Gel directly to your abdomen and/or the surface of the fetal Doppler probe before listening. Place the probe into the gel and move it slowly while maintaining consistent contact with the skin. Add more gel if needed to keep the probe moving smoothly without losing contact.

Start with enough gel to create a smooth layer between the fetal Doppler probe and your skin. You do not need to cover your entire abdomen. Add more gel as needed if the probe begins dragging on the skin or if air gaps develop while you are searching for the signal.

Using enough gel to maintain continuous contact between the probe and skin can improve ultrasound coupling, but using excessive amounts will not necessarily make a fetal heartbeat easier to find. Fetal position, gestational age, placenta position, body type, probe placement, and technique can also affect the listening experience.
